Air France Time to Think program means more fees to consumer

Posted: 06/10/2010 5:45 PM
Air France has announced that it will be charging European economy class passengers a fee to hold ticket reservations for up to 14 days. What this does is introduce the notion that travelers can have more time to decide whether they want a ticket, but now it comes at a price. Beginning June 1, Air France's Time to Think program charges 15Euros or 15British Pounds to hold a reservation at the same fare for up to 14 days. If the traveler does not confirm within that period that they want the ticket, the reservation is deleted but the fee to hold the reservation is forfeited. According to Air France, when travelers hold on to unticketed seats for long periods, it interferes with yield management processes. The Time to Think program still offers the consumer the option to hold a seat, but now at a price. from Business Travel News

Posted: 06/04/2010 5:45 PM
Registered Traveler provider Clear plans to relaunch security screening lanes this fall at Denver International Airport, the first airport to reaffirm plans to host the program whose previous owners abruptly shuttered it last summer and subsequently spiraled into bankruptcy. Clear said it expects to begin enrollment for the recalibrated program in August, charging $179 for annual access, but would honor membership terms for Clear members spurned by the predecessor company's shutdown. Denver International already has an installed base of some 20,000 such local members, who under the bankruptcy purchase agreement can opt out from having their data transferred to the new owners. IQueue, a venture that includes registered traveler provider FLO Corp. and biometric identification firm Cogent Inc., announced a commitment to launch similar lanes in Indianapolis.

UA paperless boarding passes in Denver and 4 other hubs

Posted: 03/12/2010 5:45 PM
United Airlines is launching paperless boarding pass technology at Denver International Airport and four other hubs on Friday, including Chicago and San Francisco. Passengers can go to mobile.united.com and access the check-in feature. Once the mobile boarding pass option is selected, an e-mail with a bar code will be sent to your mobile device. A machine then scans the bar code right off the screen. United worked with the Transportation Security Administration to bring the technology to DIA. R.C. TSA says the bar code is two dimensional and cannot be duplicated. The encrypted code contains the first and last name of the passenger, their flight number, the originating airport and the date of the flight. Passengers must still present a government issued photo I.D. for verification. One scanner will be located at each security checkpoint at DIA, there will be signs directing passengers to a particular lane. The machines will also be located at the gates. United is working with the TSA to offer the program at dozens of airports by this summer. It can only be used for domestic flights. TSA first launched the paperless boarding pass pilot program at Houston's Intercontinental Airport in November 2007. The pilot program is currently operating at 43 airports across the country with five airlines, including American, Continental, Delta, Alaska Airways and United.

Chinese Visa Restrictions due to H1N1

Posted: 05/12/2009 5:45 PM
May 05 2009 the Embassy of China verbally announced that for likely a short period of time the Chinese Embassy System in the United States is requiring an additional application form to be submitted along with the current requirements available on our website. We have not uploaded this Declaration form on our website because the requirement will hopefully be dropped soon. However, on our homepage is a link to our general email, just simply request the Chinese Declaration page to be emailed back to you. Due to certain political ramifications there is no real formal explanation given by the Chinese Foreign Ministry however, it is likely due to the risk to the Chinese populace of being infected on a large scale by this virus. There have been some quarantine actions taken against some Mexican Citizens, but no U.S. citizens have been detained. The purpose of the form is to allow the Chinese government to isolate the whereabouts of the applicant over a few week period. It is important to note that until further notice, the Chinese visa process will take six business days at their Embassy or Consulate locations in the United States. No Expedited Services are available at the present time.

Airfares Cheaper through Agencies

Posted: 05/01/2009 5:45 PM
Courtesy Business Travel News APRIL 30, 2009 Airfares booked last year through corporate travel agencies cost on average $61 less than identical itineraries booked through airline Web sites or online travel retailers, according to a Topaz International (a global leader in airfare auditing) study on client data released this week. Comparing the same itinerary publicly available online with fares booked through travel management companies, Topaz found agency fares were either the same or less costly nearly 92 percent of the time, down slightly from the nearly 95 percent rate reported in 2007. Topaz has conducted the research annually since 2001, finding that agencies consistently offer lower fares than publicly available retail sites.

United: passengers who need extra space

Posted: 04/16/2009 5:45 PM
For the comfort and well-being of all customers aboard United flights, we have aligned with other major airlines' seating policies relating to passengers who: are unable to fit into a single seat in the ticketed cabin; are unable to properly buckle the seatbelt using a single seatbelt extender; and/or are unable to put the seat's armrests down when seated. If unused seats are available on the ticketed United or United Express flight, then a customer meeting any of the above criteria will be reaccommodated next to an empty seat. If no unused seats are available on the ticketed flight, then the customer must either purchase an upgrade to a cabin with available seats that address the above-listed scenarios, or change his or her ticket to the next available flight and purchase a second seat in addition to the one already purchased. If a customer meeting any of the above-listed criteria cannot be accommodated next to an empty seat and chooses not to upgrade or change flights and purchase a ticket for an additional seat, he or she will not be permitted to board the flight. This policy applies to tickets purchased on or after March 4, 2009, for travel on or after April 15, 2009. Please understand that we care a great deal about all of our customers' well-being, and we have implemented this policy to help ensure that everyone's travel experiences with United are comfortable and pleasant

American to roll-out domestic inflight internet

Posted: 04/01/2009 5:45 PM
American Airlines today said it is rolling out inflight wireless Internet access to 300 domestic aircraft during the next two years, expanding on a 15-plane rollout that began last summer. The carrier in August 2008 became the first domestic airline to launch full wireless inflight Internet access, rolling out the service across its Boeing 767-200 fleet, which serves mostly transcontinental routes. American said it would install the system in conjunction with inflight connectivity provider Aircell on 150 MD-80 aircraft this year, and add it to its Boeing 737 fleet next year. Other airlines, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Virgin America, also have advanced inflight Internet offerings with Aircell. Delta continues its domestic fleetwide rollout, which eventually will include recently acquired Northwest aircraft. Last week, the carrier said it had rolled out the service to 77 planes, representing about 25 percent of its domestic fleet, the carrier said. United in January also announced plans to outfit 13 transcontinental Boeing 757 aircraft with inflight wireless Internet capabilities in the second half of this year. Air Canada also is rolling out the service, though that effort is limited to transborder flights, since Aircell's air-to-ground network extends only to U.S. airspace. Aircell charges between $7.95 and $12.95 per leg to use the service, depending on the length of haul. Aircell this month added a pricing option for passengers using Wi-Fi-enabled handheld devices at $7.95, regardless of length of haul. Southwest Airlines last month also launched a limited three-airplane pilot of inflight Internet service with Aircell competitor Row 44, while Alaska Airlines also has announced plans to roll out Row 44's satellite-based Internet offering. courtesy BTNonline

Update to UA lowest fare policy

Posted: 03/30/2009 5:45 PM
Lowest Fare Policy On March 20, 2009, our policy for vouchers that are offered when a non-refundable fare lowers in price was changed to be brought in line with what other major U.S. airlines do. When a non-refundable fare lowers in price and a customer would like a refund for the difference, we will continue to offer a travel voucher, and like many other U.S. airlines, we will now apply an administrative fee. The administrative fee for a domestic ticket is $150, which is the same fee assessed for changing a non-refundable ticket. The administrative fee for an international ticket varies. We are making this change to match other U.S. airline practices, to stay consistent with our policy for changing a non-refundable ticket, and most importantly, so we can keep our fares competitive for all customers.

New BA baggage policies

Posted: 03/12/2009 5:45 PM
The changes are: 1. Maximum dimensions of items that can be checked in without incurring the special bag charge at all airports worldwide will be 81 inches (35.5in x 29.5in x 16in) or 208cm (90cm x 75cm x 43cm). 2. Introduction of a $45 USD (GBP25) handling charge for bags between 81 inches and 149.5 inches (94.5in+29.5in+25.5in) or 380cm (240cm +75cm+65cm). 3. Introduction of a $45 USD (GBP25) handling charge for firearms. The changes will affect passengers who travel from April 1, 2009. The changes reflect the additional manual processes required to handle larger items and that firearms must be handled securely through a third-party specialist agent. Customers who are travelling with items that incur a handling charge will need to pay at the airport when they check in. Standard baggage allowances are unchanged.

Hertz raises rates

Posted: 02/09/2009 1:14 PM
Hertz on Monday raised its car-rental rates at North American airport locations to help offset higher vehicle-depreciation costs and increased maintenance costs. Stagnant credit markets, slumping demand for travel and the auto industry's hardships are hobbling rental-car companies. Fewer travelers are renting cars, and the industry is struggling to find buyers for used automobiles and secure financing to purchase new ones to replace them. Hertz said the most recent price increases -- $5 a day or $30 a week -- move the rates closer to last year's levels when the company was trying to offset skyrocketing gas prices. The latest move doesn't affect negotiated contract rates. Hertz said the average rate fell 2% the past year. Last month, Hertz said it was cutting more than 4,000 jobs, or about 13% of its global work force. Standard & Poor's Investors Services has said the economic crisis has taken a harder-than-expected toll on the car-rental industry compared with previous downturns. Analyst Betsy Snyder has attributed the slump to a significant reduction in airline capacity serving the U.S. market, the current ownership structure of the companies, the weakness of the auto makers and the inability of the companies to gain access to the capital markets. New Requirements for travel to US

Posted: 01/05/2009 11:43 AM
The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an enhancement (from a security perspective) to the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) that currently permits Nationals from 'approved' foreign countries to travel to the US without a visa for stays of 90 days or less. Whereas the VWP provided entry into the US without pre-trip passenger scrutiny, ESTA will serve as a way for the Department of Homeland Security to gauge potential security risks prior to a VWP individual boarding a plane to the US.
